Week 14: Tokyo's Temples & Shrines (posted by Annie)

Yanaka, the neighborhood that we stayed in, is famous for its dozens of Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. You could walk from one of our street to the other and pass by three or four temples and shrines.

In my research project, I'll talk more about the differences between shrines and temples, but it has been fun to learn about Japanese religion this past week. The Yanaka walking tour first introduced us to several beautiful Buddhist temples and shrines. Eliza and I even made a wish at a Shinto shrine.

I also learned more about Buddhism when I went to a bonsai museum -- the art of growing and pruning miniature trees. There was also a shrine dedicated to cats right next to our AirBnB!

And we did lots of other fun stuff in Tokyo.

  1. Hi Anne! I can’t wait to hear more about the difference between temples and shrines! Was that a shrine to Olaf, or warm hugs? Warm hugs to you! We miss you!
