Week 5: Enjoying Colombia's Coffee Countryside (posted by Megan)

Tomorrow morning, our lovely three weeks in the Colombian countryside will come to an end as we head north to the Caribbean coast.  As Wade shared, daily life in Filandia has been a treat.  One additional benefit of our time here has been getting to enjoy the beautiful coffee region surrounding us.

Last week, we took a Willy (i.e., the open-top vintage jeeps that serve as taxis in the region, usually with a few people standing on the back bumper) to tackle the Cocora Valley hike.  It's one of the go-to activities for people visiting the coffee country for a reason - a well-marked, 12 km path, with the world's tallest wax palms at one end and a quiet trail criss-crossing a mountain creek at the other end.

More recently, we've enjoyed just wandering our way down one of the gravel roads leading out of town through farms and past country homes.

On these walks, we are reminded that we're in the Andes - the hills are pretty incredible.

This may end up being our longest stretch in one place during this crazy year - it has been a delightful, slow-paced start as we settle in to homeschooling and vagabond life.

  1. Love all of these hikes! That bridge looks reminiscent of the first year walk in Moshi, though maybe a tad more structurally sound.
