Week 15: Hiroshima & Kyoto (posted by Eliza)

Last week, we boarded a bullet train from Tokyo to Hiroshima. We went there for the history and the okonomiyaki, which is like an omelette-type thing with noodles and cabbage and like a crepe. They cook it right in front of you.

I think that we all know what is on the history-side of Hiroshima. If you want a re-cap, the American bombed Hiroshima with an atomic bomb, which leveled the city. They did this to end World War II.

Hiroshima has been rebuilt and there aren't many old buildings left. There is the famous dome. We had a walking tour guide named Eiji who showed us a basement less than five hundred meters away from the hypocenter where the bomb struck. Everybody in the building died except for one man who miraculously survived the 7,000 degree heat (Celcius). There is a park in the middle of Hiroshima called the Peace Park, and we walked around it. There are a lot of monuments for the devastating experience that people had to go through. There is also a museum in the peace park which tells the tales of some of the survivors and the people killed. All of the tales are tragic.

The very next day we boarded a train to Kyoto. Kyoto is tourist-packed. We went to a Buddhist temple called Kiyomizu-dera. Tourists were shoulder to shoulder, or should I say kimono to kimono. People try to take picturesque pictures with their rented kimonos, but most of them were not successful because of all of the other tourists.

We also went to a ginormous park. It turns out that the park was the old Imperial Palace. It was fun to race dad around the big path. Finally, we went to a Zen Buddhist garden. It made me feel very calm and that I was part of something bigger than myself.

Overall, I had a lot of fun. Right now, we are in Kanazawa.

  1. Thank you for the great recap, Eliza! Your vocabulary impresses me. I had to look up the difference between hypocenter and epicenter. Is this something you learned about with respect to the atomic bomb, or with respect to earthquakes, or both?
